Warm Weather Adaptation

Every spring we get a period of time where the warmer weather catches a lot of people out in their training (and sometimes racing).
Out bodies have trained through the winter in colder, wetter weather and our temperature control systems have had a relatively easy ride. When the warm weather arrives our bodies and brains have to re-learn how to balance our temperature controls and adjust back to the higher effort and energy this requires.
Spring can also be a time of unpredictable weather and, in order to fully adapt to warmer temperatures best, we need the weather to be fairly consistently warm for a few weeks. Here in the UK at least that doesn’t really happen…!
So, what can we do?
Firstly be aware that the warm weather will make runs feel harder, and lift our heart and breathing rates as our bodies work harder to stay cool. So slow things down! Run to effort level, breathing or heart rate so you get the same training effect from the runs and don’t push too hard.
Stay hydrated before and during your runs and start thinking about taking on electrolytes to help support the functioning of our cooling system.
