Human Bodies are Complicated!

With both my Running Coaching and Sports Massage work I spend quite a lot of time explaining aspects of how our bodies work from a movement and "muscular skeletal" perspective to my clients. Muscular skeletal means the skeleton/bones, the muscles and the things that connect them together and help them work like ligaments, tendons and joints.
I've recently started doing a video series on the anatomy of various areas of our body on my YouTube channel
Wo, why did I start this video series? It's all because our bodies are wonderful, and complicated! There are so many things going on, different types of tissues, processes, movements, healing time and things that might get injured or go a bit wrong.
So when someone posts online asking "my knee hurts, what should I do?" and gets lots of personal experiences or answers (no matter how well meaning) from others; you have no idea what the actual cause of the pain is and whether that advice will be helpful or might even delay healing or cause further problems...
The best with any pain or injury is to go to see a physiotherapist; they are specifically trained to asses you, help find the root cause of the pain/issue (though this may involve the input of other medical professions or x-rays and scans etc) and come up with the best rehab plan to help fix it.
It's also commong to think that if "my knee hurts" that it's a joint problem and therefore more "serious". As you'll see in my videos there are so many muscles, tendons, ligaments and other tissues around every joint that the "root cause" could be so many things. The cause may even be coming from a totally different area of the body!
Different "tissue types" also have different healing times;
muscles heal in weeks
bones heal in months
ligaments and tendons heal in months to over a year
cartilage heals in year(s)
So the key is to get a proper disgnosis from a medical professional and listen to their advice on rehab. But if you want to learn a little about how our bodies work head over to YouTube and watch my videos!
